Joining Our Lodge

The Process

The process of joining the fraternity usually takes a few months, but rest assured that this was designed to provide you with we hope that during this time, you will have the opportunity to get to learn more about Freemasonry in general, get to know the members at our lodge, as well as giving us the chance to get to know you in return.ย

The process of joining a Masonic Lodge may vary from one Lodge to another. Some Lodges may have a lengthier and more comprehensive process, while others may have a more straightforward approach. The following procedure has been developed and accepted by the members of our Lodge to ensure that you are a good fit for us and to give you the time to get to know about or organization and its members, and to ultimately decide if Freemasonry is something you wish to pursue.ย Take the time and get to know us.ย

It is essential to keep in mind that not all Masonic Lodges are the same, and the focus and culture of each Lodge can vary. We encourage you to get to know us as well as possible during this process and to ask as many questions as you may have.

It is necessary for all prospective applicants to go through a vetting process to help ensure that you have a positive experience as a member of a Lodge.ย  You should also consider the distance of the Lodge from your home, as it should be within a reasonable distance for you to travel to meetings. If the distance is a concern, let us know so we can help you find a Lodge closer to your residence.ย

If at any point you decide that you no longer wish to pursue membership in our Lodge, or would like to consider other Lodges, please let us know. Our main priority is to ensure you feel comfortable and at ease throughout this process. We hope that this will be a positive experience for you.ย

Eligibility

The doors of Freemasonry are open to men who seek harmony with their fellow man, feel the need for self-improvement and wish to participate in making this world a better place to live. In order to be considered for membership you must:ย

  • Be 21 years of age or olderย
  • Be of good character and reputationย
  • Believe in the existence of a Supreme Beingย
  • Have resided in Ontario for the previous 12 monthsย

While these qualifications are mandatory, they do not guarantee membership.ย ย  We must feel a sense of compatibility and that you are a good fit for the culture of our Lodge and we want to make sure that potential members feel the same about joining our community as well.ย

Costs

Humber Lodge is a not-for-profit organization, and as such our operations are financed by our members and we do require a financial commitment for membership. As a new member, you will be required to pay an initiation fee and pro-rated yearly dues. It is important to familiarize yourself with these costs during your first few visits to the lodge, feel free to speak to the Worshipful Master or Secretary of the Lodge to get the most updated costs associated with membership. Please note that the financial commitment should not create a burden for you or your family.ย

Expectations of members

Freemasonry is judged largely by the actions and lives of its individual members. When a man is known to be a Freemason, it is the standard by which the outside world judges our organisation.ย  To ensure that our reputation remains impeccable we expect you to maintain the standards set out in the qualifications for membership.ย

Freemasonry demands and expects that every member will place the needs of his family first, his obligations to his vocation second, and after these his duties to Freemasonry.ย  Ideally, it is hoped that members will desire to attend and actively participate during the lodge meetings and positively contribute, as their time permits, to Masonry in general and to their lodge in particular.ย
